Anna Politkovskaya is nominated for EU`s Human Rights Award
The Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya, who was murdered in Moscow last October, has been nominated for the European Union`s Human Rights Award. The official list of candidates will be published later today.
The prize is named after prominent Soviet nuclear physicist and human rights activist, Andrey Sakharov. It`s awarded annually to a person or a group judged to have made a significant contribution to the promotion of human rights and democracy.
Anna Politkovskaya wrote extensively on corruption and human rights violations in the Chechen Republic. She was also a harsh critic of the Russian government.
She was shot dead in her apartment in October.
Last week 10 people were arrested in connection with her death.
